According to DeKUTSO Secretary General Nicholas Ngetich, the decision was made without consultation, and that they firmly denounce it as it is an affront to the students’ leadership .
This development comes after an announcement from the Directorate of Students’ Welfare, stating that each undergraduate student would receive an equal share of Ksh.180 from the presidential gift.
Esther Nthiga, the Director of Student Affairs, explained that the university (DeKUT) arrived at this decision of sharing Ruto’s donation following a survey conducted among the student body via a Google form.
The results showed that 51% of students favored equal distribution, 36.5% preferred a luncheon, and 35.5% suggested allocating the funds to the students’ bursary.
“Following the outcome of the public participation, it has been decided that every undergraduate student during the January-April 2024 semester, including students who are on internal attachment during the semester will be given Ksh.180,”she stated in a memo dated April 98
Class representatives were instructed to notify students to collect their share from the Directorate office between Friday 9th and Friday 19th. Any remaining funds will be redirected to the students’ bursary.
